When someone is in their body and feels connected to it, they will experience life in a certain way. For one thing, they will be aware of what their feelings and needs are, and this will mean that they will be in touch with their true-self.
Along with this, they will probably find that they feel fairly at ease and that their breathing is deep. The connection that they have with themselves is then going to have an effect on the connection that they have with others. A Mirror What this comes down to is that the connection one has with their own body will define the type of connection they have with the world. So by being intimately connected to themselves, they will be able to intimately connect to other people and the world in general. If this is how they typically experience life, there is a strong chance that they will have a number of deep and authentic relationships. They might be in an intimate relationship or they might not. Balanced Having this connection is naturally going to have a positive effect on their mental and emotional health. Instead of having the tendency to be stressed and completely unsettled, they will be used to feeling at peace. From here, it will be a lot easier for them to think clearly and then to do things that will serve them. What will allow them to realise how beneficial it is for them to live in this way will be what takes place whenever they leave their body. For Example If one was to go through a stressful time at work or had family problems, for instance, they could end up leaving their body. This will show that it is too hard for them to handle how they feel. Their attention will no longer be divided between their head and their body; it will be fully in their head. Thanks to this, one can lose touch with their needs and feelings, neglecting themselves in the process. A Momentary Lapse They will have gone from feeling rooted to the ground, to feeling as though they are all at sea. During this time, they could lose or gain weight due to not eating properly, stop seeing friends, not get enough sleep and underperform at work, amongst other things. Sooner or later, they may find that they are able to get back into their body and to go back to how they were before. This could take place after what is going on externally has settled down or after they have reached out for professional support. The Support Is There However, as one typically has a good connection with their body and has deep connections with others, they are likely to have a lot of support around them. Being around people like this is going to regulate their system, thereby slowing them to gradually wind down again. They won’t be able to regulate themselves during this time, but the people around them will be able to step in. And once they have come back down to earth, they won’t need as much from these people. Another Scenario Although someone like this will have the odd moment when they are not in their body, there will be others that are practically always out of their body. Consequently, they are rarely going to know what their needs and feelings are. Furthermore, they are going to spend a lot of time being on edge and this is likely to mean that their breathing will often be shallow too. Experiencing fear and anxiety can then be a normal part of their life. All at Sea Other people could often describe them as someone who is highly-strung or even neurotic. But even if they don’t, it will be incredibly difficult for them to settle themselves down and to feel at peace. There is then going to be no need for them to have a lot of stress at work or family problems, for instance, as they will feel overwhelmed anyway. If something does happen, they could end up going even further over the edge. Disconnected Not being connected to their body is most likely going to cause them to feel cut-off from everyone and everything. By living on the surface of themselves, then, one can experience a deep sense of isolation and loneliness. Therefore, if they do have people in their life, they probably won’t feel connected to them. The truth is that one is connected to everyone and everything, but as they are out of touch with their body, it will seem as though this is not the case. Getting Back In One way of looking at this would be to say that one needs to learn how to ground themselves, so that they can stay in their body. Breathing into their stomach and not getting caught up in their thoughts can be another suggestion. This might work, but the big question is: why is one experiencing life in this way? And not only this; why do they spend so much time feeling overwhelmed? A Closer Look What this is likely to illustrate is that at one point in their life, they experienced a lot of trauma. Perhaps this is something that they have experienced during their adult years or maybe it was something that they experienced during their early years. If it goes back their early years, it could show that they experienced some kind of abuse and/or neglect. This would have been a time when their whole being was overwhelmed and the only way for them to handle this pain would have been to leave their body. Awareness The years would have passed but the trauma that they experienced all those years ago would have stayed in their body. And, just like when they were a child, being in their body will be too painful. For this to change, one will need to resolve the trauma that is held in their body. This is something that can take place by using something called somatic experiencing or TRE.
